Many people who never experienced corporal punishment have asked me the following:
“Why did you let them do that to you?”
“Why didn’t you just resist?”
“Why didn’t you run away?”
Well, I always knew why I was being punished. I always knew it was going to be very unpleasant, but I also knew I deserved the punishment. So I accepted it.
Of course, when I was a young child I tried to avoid punishment at first. But the punishments I received for resisting or running made it very clear to me that such actions were not prudent.
I learned – as many others have learned in their childhood, i suppose – that you get punished sometimes, and that you have to take your punishment obediently.
