Corporal punishment always comes in various forms. Be it a motherly handspanking, administered knickers-down over her knees while she sits on the side of your bed, a primary-school slippering or ones father really teaching you a lesson with the hazel, knickers down and bent over his cherry-wood desk. This is part one of a series i want to write about the rituals and legends asscociated with some implements commonly used for corporal punishment. We will begin, of course, with the cane.
The cane, being a very traditional and once very common implement for correction, of course comes with a load of special punishment rituals attached. Standing at attention in front of the headmasters desk, being told to bend over or to “touch your toes”. Or holding out your palms for the stinging vicious rattan, while the whole class is watching. To recieve a genuine “six of the best” across a tightly streched pair of uniform knickers. Perhaps having to count out aloud the number of strokes, or having to thank the disciplinarian for your much deserved punishment.
The word “cane” alone (or “Rohrstock”, as it is called in my native german language) evokes a lot of pictures and fantasies. It is almost a synonym for “school corporal punishment”.
I did not get caned growing up, but my brother did. My sister had one taste of it, too, and some friends of mine also did, some even quite regularly.
When I use the cane today, and I only use it for the gravest offences, I relish in the thougt of using such a time-proven device of correction. Even those who have only one single time tasted the bite of the rattan will not ever forget it, nor will they forget the lessons taught with its help.
The cane, even with its current demise in most parts of europe and the UK, does still see widespread use in asia and africa, both in parental and school discipline.
As you say – once experienced, never forgotten! i have always found that when my errors are corrected with the cane, they are never repeated – its not something i could ever get used to or enjoy……though the ritual does have a powerful effect, john
Your last statement summed it up well. And maybe that’s what is wrong with Western Society – no caning! We’ve become so undisciplined. We don’t want to “hurt” anybody. But you know well that everyone needs disciplining at one time or another. Our society today despartely needs instruments like the cane reinstituted. I hate to think what our undisciplined society will be like 10, 20, 50 years down the road. I’ve never received the cane myself, fortunately, but I have received other tools. As long as we keep removing these tools for punishment purposes, we are doomed to eventual social chaos. Thank you for your insights, Stefanie, and do continue spanking as you see fit.
I did not the cane growing up, but I did get the “hickory switch” and it is very similar. It hurt a lot and the lesson it imparted was one not to be forgotten.
Very informative. I hope the lessons continue.
My mom was a big believer in the switch too. Ouch! but very effective.
Yep, switch in this country, I never heard of a cane until I started talking to the english spank-o’s in the 90’s.
Although at home it seemed that not only me,but everyone either got the “belt”-“strap”[female version of belt it seemed]-and the worst punishment of all-“pants down” in front of everybody around. I had a real issue with this one-and in school the teacher/principal allways used a paddle ,these paddles were 24″ long and each teacher had their own personalized “name” on them -“white heat” was one I remember, and when the swats were being administered [hard as possible] the position was bent over with hands gripping ankles, and facing a classroom usually filled with the next periods students. Our uniform pants ,a polyester ,almost shiny fabric was invented to maximize the paddles’ impact I swear to this day!I still own a few pair just in case…
i got the cane at school, mostly on the hands and the hazel switch/rod at home from my mum on my bare bottom.iif my mum found out i was caned at school i got the switch at home also.she always said it was a good thing that the teachers did not beat my bottom or i would end up very sore.we lived in the town where most dads used the belt but my mum had grown up on a farm and had been punished with the rod. they grew free in every wood while a cane cost 6d(old pence)in the hardware shop. i remember this as i was sent by my teacher to buy one when he broke his old one. i was the first to get the new one.
Yes, miss. The cane is a legend here. I wish it were still around! Carry on writing! Sarah
Yes, I found a thin whippy cane was an unforgettable solution to extremne situations,
even to a tough teenager, where a slipper had made little impression.
I guess I stand alone here when I say that my feelings toward the cane as a punishment instrument is totally barbaric. This tool is simply put ‘abuse’ and nothing more. Why in all goodness name would someone use such a wicked thing on a child?
Any other spanking implement such as slipper, paddle, belt, hand, wooden spoon, ruler etc… stings like heck. I think perhaps after seeing the damage such a tool has done, those who are in charge actually woke up in their decision to outlaw corporal punishment. I bet if the above tools were used to spank the naughty, this type of punishment may still be at hand.
Those who appose the outlawing of cp can only point a suspect finger at the administrators who abused IT and their authority.
Waow loved reading this blogpost. I submitted your rss to my reader.
In my youthful years in England, I became sexually aroused thinking of spanking one of my teachers’s. I dreamt of bending her over her desk, taking up her dress waist high, and pulling down her bloomer’s ‘directoire knickers’, to around her ankles, and caning that voluptous bare bottom of hers with a pliable swishy cane. 12 strokes would have been perfect to be applied stingingly across that naked rear end of hers.
Truth is stranger than fiction. I know of a teacher who has had a taste of her own medicine – my mother. I knew she was spanked by my father and she has admitted that occasionally he caned her. This was many years ago of course and she said it helped when she herself was administering the cane as she knew just what it felt like and she did wear bloomers but unlike in your dream hers were not taken down. Obviously I had the cane at home and at school and it was more painful than any other instrument.
How I wish I could cane you Stephanie. Just like that female English teacher of mine. How I would lovingly bend you over a desk, raise your dress to your waist, pull down your knickers, and upon that luscious bare bottom of yours, cane you a dozen times. Yes lovingly I would swish this wonderful implement of pain, across your beautiful bare bottom. I can dream Stephanie, yes such a wonderful dream. And thank you for answering my reply.
I think corporal punishment is not suite on this era. Can you imagine how embarrassing to be punished like that? Doesn’t it simply give lessons in advance and give bad effects to kids? it will lessen the kids’ self-confidence and they are afraid to go to school because school is just like a prison. They are too afraid to try on something because if they fail they will get penalty. They will not be creative and just obey what their teachers command. How would it be?
If some CUNT hit my daughter I would put them SIX FOOT UNDER
As I said if some one did this to my daughter I would Kick The Hell out of them FULL STOP
when i was at school the headmistress used a strap to punish unruly girls always on the hands i got it about 4 times when i was 12 for talking in class 1 on each hand, at 13 got 3 for smoking at 14 4 for fighting at 15 six of the best. my mother always used the cane. got 10 strokes when at 16 for alcohol drinking, administerd in front of my 19 year old sister, was to make her feel guilty fo leading me astray.
I was caned all the time as a child (at school) but it sure did me good.
I remember once, I was called up to be caned infront of the whole class, and as I did so, I grabbed the cane from the sister and started caning her! I was severely punished for it but it was worthwhile. She never touched me again!
I was also whipped by my aunt when I cut the laces of my stay at night (which was every night) but now I have a wonderful figure.
My mother always used the cane on my siblings and I. Even now I use the cane on my children whenever they do something naughty. My mother even spanked my friends when they came over if they did something bad. Their mothers never complained (altough they wouldn’t have gotten such a spanking at home).
I think corporal punishment should be brought back into modern day society for otherwise, what lessons will people learn? I know I learnt a great deal of lessons in my lifetime!
No Ben… you do NOT stand alone – even if it has been a while since your post! I agree, why ANYONE would use a hand, slipper, paddle, whip, birch, cane, flogger, belt, strap, tawse, wooden spoon or indeed anything to hit /spank a child I have no idea! It is indeed a cruel and terrible practise and teaches nothing. Well not quite true – I learned to hate my parents, to not trust them, I learned anger too as I was a mild child! I am not allowed, nor would I want to hit my husband for not taking out the bin, it is ABUSE and so is hitting a child!
I tried a wooden spoon out on myself recently, as I had read about a parent using ‘ONLY a wooden spoon 3 times’ on her 2 year olds bottom on the bare’ . I used it over my jean and panties. I hit only moderately if that. It hurt like hell. It was as red as a tomato. And …. it stayed red, much to my husband’s disgust for a few days. It was also stingy for most of that time too and hurt under the skin.
Now .. a real question for you all: Why was it that, at my High school with NO corporal punishment, we were all perfectly behaved, dressed neatly, did well, and were all well thought about by the locals and that at the OTHER High school down the road that DID use Corporal Punishment, the pupils were utter hooligans and never gave two thoughts about anyone ?? Interesting … no?
What High-School did you go to??
I went to one in a suburb of London in the UK …
Do you know that once I was in High School, and ever since, right through raising my own children [without hitting them] I never came across anyone that I knew personally that hit their children?
I think the cane should DEFINETLEY be brought back into society.
When I was at school, most of the time I couldn’t concentrate on my work because people around me were talking. I lived in a rural area so maybe they should bring it back for country towns.
If people were talking around you Brigid, then the teacher should have taken control. No one deserves to be hit. It just makes kids and adults more angry and more likely to act up. I know if a teacher had hit me or wanted to hit me I would have walked out. I would rather have lived in a cardboard box than be hit. It destroys your heart, your self worth and your soul.
